Pretend City Children’s Museum – Autism Night

Irvine, CA. - April 21, 2010 - On April 21, 2010, Pretend City Children’s Museum in Orange County hosted their first Autism Night.  This night was specifically designed for children with Autism and their families.  Pretend City Children’s Museum hosted several planning meetings in which museum staff, parent/grandparent advocates, and various local agencies met to help design an evening that would be beneficial to families who have a child with autism.

ACES was fortunate to be able to help volunteer for this special night.  ACES had 15 volunteers who helped in several areas including checking families in, helping parents find their way around the museum, and just having some plain ‘ol fun at the museum with the families.  Kids were able to make art projects, play dress up in several of their areas, “work” at several locations including: a construction site, doctors office, police station, and a fire station. Some even chose to dress up and go on stage, visit a farm and pick fruit, and many other activities.  It was a great to see so many families enjoy this special time. Upon leaving the museum several families commented on how much fun they had! The event was held from 5:30 p.m.- 8:30 p.m. and was a HUGE success.  There were 63 families who attended for a total of 273 people and an additional 40+ volunteers.

The next Autism day will be August 9, 2010 from 2:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.   Please check Pretend City Children’s Museum’s website for registration information or send an email to autismnights@pretendcity.org .The cost for this event is $10.00 for a family of 5.  If you would like to attend this event in August and would like your behavioral interventionist to accompany you and your family, they can be included in your “family.”  Please contact your ACES Supervisor to make arrangements.
